layers of layers

Wet Seal Rugby Stripe (similar), A&F button down (similar), AE jeans, Coach leopard flats (even better?), Banana Republic bracelet (similar), Sideways cross necklace, Urban Renewal from UO earrings (similar)

One of my favorite things about Fall is that I can start layering again! Yipee! Oh, I just realized even the fences in the pics are layered. Hmm, coincidences. :) While trying to figure out what to wear today, I decided to rebel (just a little) the wisdom of my mom that was bestowed upon me as a child..."you can't wear that many patterns together, people are going to think you're crazy." Um...maybe I am, but I like it. And where in the rule book does it say that pinstripes, rugby stripes, and leopard print don't go together? Oh, page 147? Well, who wrote that stupid rule book?!

I have a confession. Remember I have an obsession with tailored pieces, like these pleated shorts? Well, I also am in love with leather. What a great combination...tailored, leather shorts. Who knew? I like the idea of a vintage inspired pair with a high waist and cuffs. I have been wanting a pair for forever and finally decided if I could come up with enough outfits to make this a worthwhile purchase, then I'd go for it! Also, make sure to read all the way to the bottom ;)

Let's just consider this purchase justified. Perhaps I've already purchased a similar pair of leather shorts. Perhaps I snagged something for YOU TOO. AND perhaps I'll give everyone who has joined my site prior to the giveaway posting an extra entry. To join, click on Join This Site via Google Friend Connect (left hand side of this page). If you couldn't tell, I'm not good at keeping secrets ;) If you see someone checking their mail compulsively, no worries....It's just me, anxiously awaiting our arrival of goodies!

Make sure to leave a comment below to help me keep track of who is a "prior member"...remember you have up until the night before the giveaway post. Your guess is as good as mine as to when that'll don't procrastinate lovelies!

Abercrombie Floral Cardigan (similar), Old Navy Tee, Forever 21 Belt,

Anybody know the life expectancy of a cricket? I have had one in my basement for wayyyy too long. I hear him all the time (I'm of course assuming it's a "him"). It's kind of like my own personal sound effects. I'll blog something cheezy...there he is...the cricket noise that makes me think nobody will get my odd sense of humor. Even Two and a Half Men can't catch a break...punch line...crickets. Eek! I'm too full of sarcasm to deal with all this pressure.

what to wear to October wedding?

How was your weekend? Mine was good...relaxing. Went to a casual bridal shower on Saturday and shopping on Sunday. I have been thinking about my friend's wedding and what I'm going to be wearing. It's only a couple of weeks away...I'm just a little bit of a procrastinator. Ok, a lot. Don't judge me. I know what to wear to a spring or summer wedding. Fall weddings are tricky though. Here are some ideas of the direction I'm leaning. Any thoughts?

Row 1: French Connection Shift (detail is great...wish it wasn't so expensive!), ASOS wrap, ASOS slit sleeve dress, ASOS one shoulder
(I own these last 2 already and could dress up the sweater dress...but...I don't know) What are your thoughts? Have you been to a wedding in October? What did you wear?

streusel dessert pizza

I got a craving for this the other literally kept me awake half the night. "Jeez why do you look like crud today?!" "Oh I was up all night, tossing and turning, thinking about pizza." I haven't had it in years so I'm not sure what made me recall it. random. When I was little we'd go to Godfather's Pizza (it's a midwest thing), but most have closed now. My mom would bribe me with it to eat "real food." I was on a quest to find a copycat recipe! For those of you who've had it, it's super close. For those of you who haven''s identical...I can tell you that because you won't know the difference :)

Pizza dough
Any pizza dough you prefer (refrigerated, dry mix, homemade) I used betty crocker dry mix
1 tBsp melted butter

1 cup flour
1/3 white sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tBsp solid shortening
2 tBsp oil (preferably buttery) or do half oil and half melted butter

1 cup powdered sugar
2 tBsp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla

Mix ingredient of streusel with fork. Just mash it together. It should start to clump...if it's too sticky add more dry ingredients, if it's not clumping add a little more oil (a lil goes a long way so be careful).

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Make pizza dough. Oil a 12" pizza pan and spread dough into pan. Spread melted butter over dough. Sprinkle dough with cinnamon (amount depends on taste). Top with just enough streusel mix to cover the dough*.

Bake for 10-13 minutes (watching carefully towards the end, if it starts to darken too quickly put aluminum foil over to keep from burning streusel). Meanwhile pour the icing ingredients into a plastic baggy. Mush it together in the baggy. Once your pizza is done. Set it out to cool. Snip off a small corner of your baggy and drizzle icing over pizza.

*Note: you will have left over streusel mix. Don't dump it all on the pizza...just a thin coating otherwise it'll be dry.

bad hair day

Why is it when we have a bad hair day, we want to keep messing with it? My hair wasn't really that bad this morning...just a little eh. So I decided oooo beach waves! Wrong. I added texturizer, scrunched, and should have left it alone, but noooooo. I decided it looked like dookie so I'll just actually take the time to curl it. Let's recap: bad hair day + texturizer + curls=lady of the night. Don't attempt it, unless that's the look you're going for I suppose. Anywho, up it went into my messy nurse bun. Yup, that cute lil messy bun that everyone sports...that was created by us busy nurses who are about to lose their minds and don't wanna get any of THAT (you probably don't need details) anywhere near our hair. You are welcome. :)

Quick way to tie belt: cinch normally (assuming you're normal), take the tail and go under the belt, bringing it back and tucking it under the loop

White cardigan (similar), Express sequin tank, F21 belt, AE skinny jeans, Coach leopard flats (similar), Bow earrings (similar), Gifted turquoise bracelet, Vintage pearl ring (similar)

stare bears

This weekend Jake and I went to the open house for the Kauffman Center of the Performing Arts, here in KC, during it's Grand Opening weekend. It was b.e.a.utiful! Complete with all it's red carpet gory! Unnnnnfortunately, we had to wait 2.5 hours in line (in overcast/drizzly weather) to get in. Wedges were probably not the best idea for the day...who knew? It was well worth it though...if you don't look at my hair, that is (I swear I started the day with curls).

So I got a little picture happy this weekend because the architecture of the building was amazing and wanted to get pics of it all! There were definitely a lot of stare bears. Explanation: play on "care bears" only they stare...a lot. It got a little awkward but eh.

Me: Express cardigan, Gap T, Aerie Scarf (similar), Gap Jeans, Donald J. Pliner Boots(similar), Coach bag, Banana Republic acrylic bracelet, Grandma's vintage rings

Now on to a look of the building! The last 2 pics were my favorite of the 2 performance halls. I LOVE the architecture! I've been wanting to repaint my bedroom and my wood furniture is the same color as the wood they used...I think a lighter version of that steel blue is the way to go with paint! Thoughts?

source (I couldn't get a picture of the whole building b/c my personal helicopter is in the shop this week...bummer)

happy thoughts

So these are just a few of the things I'm currently happy about. Nothing crazy but things I'm just excited to share with you.

1) Tarte Lip Stain in Lust: I'm transitioning into red lips. I'm loving them so far but it takes some getting use to. I am in LUST with this color! It's a true red but it's a superrrrr moisturizing stain so it's not overtly intense. I'm thinking it might be even more hydrating than my burts bees chapstick. Competition?

2) Lush Aromaco Deodorant: This baby is au naturale! And no aluminum! It's a natural antibacterial and has chamomile...happy pits :)

3) Aerie Scarf (similar): Who knew there were so many ways to tie a scarf? Crazy...ppl have too much time, but keep it up! I love the inspiration!

4) OPI Hopelessly in Love: This color is almost a perfect match for my skin tone! Just a lil hint of pink to be noticed! Makes my fingers look a mile long...good thing? Wait let's revise that...I doubt I could accomplish anything with mile long fingers...anyway you get the point. It's perfection.

5) Gap Long & Lean Jeans: The name doesn't lie. I walked out of the dressing room and Jake had to give me double take. He's seen me in pretty much nothing but skinny jeans for 3.5 yrs. The look on his face was all I needed. I'll take 2 please!

6) Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Latte: I doubt you need a link for this one ya go! No way to describe other than autumn in a cup. Don't miss out.

7) Something else I'm excited about is date night with Jake! My hunny & I planned something different for this weekend...I've had to work the last few weekends so we needed to do something fun. I'll have pics for ya next week. Promise!

Are there any products, upcoming events, etc that are giving you happy thoughts? Post 'em in the comments; I love getting to hear from you! Enjoy your weekend! Mwah!

Funny how when it's 55 outside after the grooling summer you need to snuggle in a sweater but when it's 55 during the spring you think it's beach weather. Who gets to decide what the "it feels like" temp is? Are these people from the Arctic? 55 and feels like feels cold! That's what it feels like! Hmm point? I thought I had one. Perhaps it was...Ooooo look at my cute sweater and boots! Classic. Distraction method. Yup, it'll getcha every time.

chicken & wild rice soup

Did I fail to mention I'm a brace face? Hmmmm....I wonder why that slipped my mind? Yay, for ceramics! Anywho, I got them tightened today, so I'll be eating pretty much baby food consistencies for the next few days. Lack of chewing capabilities and upcoming fall weather...soup sounded like the answer.

Chicken & Wild Rice Soup
2 quarts chicken broth
1 tsp chicken bouillon granules
2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp dried sage
1 tbsp chopped parsley
1 tbsp chopped cilantro
2 garlic cloves
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper

3/4 cup wild rice
1/4 cup long grain rice (you can use a pre-mixed bag of both rices)
1 cup pearl barley
1 cup finely chopped carrot
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 cup finely chopped celery
1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes (I use Hunt's Fire Roasted [for a kick, use Ro-tel])

3 chicken breasts (cooked and shredded)
1 bay leaf
Optional: (for creamy soup) 1/2 cup butter and 2 cups heavy cream
or garnish with a dallop of sour cream (my fav! And my pants will still fit in the morning!)

It looks like a lot of ingredients but trust me it'll be a great flavor and I'm sure you have most of it in your kitchen already. This is super easy (cross my heart). Toss all the ingredients into a pot. Bring to a boil. Then simmer for 40-50 minutes (til your rice is done). Take out your bay leaf. Finished! Seeeeee, easy huh?

all you need is...

I'm not normally into graphic tees...or any type of writing across my chest for that matter, but when I saw this t-shirt I had to get it! It's written in one continuous sweet.

Oh, and I got 4 inches cut off my hair! Don't know if you can tell in the pics. I started classes back up last week and there's something about that 1st day of school that makes me want to get a hair cut. If nothing else, I always plan one around this time of year. Plus, I really needed it...I was tired of my ends looking like something I found in the desert!
