work it wednesday: sequin skirt

Holiday parties are coming up...what better piece for Christmas and New Year's than a sequin skirt? I decided to get one this year but the thought of something so pretty just hanging in my closet to only come out and play 1-2 times a year makes me sad. Therefore, for this rendition of work it wednesday I wanted to find 3 ways I could actually wear a sequin skirt:

Of course to a Christmas party. My rules of thumb: If you wear a mini then cover your top portion. If you have a loud statement piece (sequins) tone it down with a classic/basic (sweater). Please do not be the girl who shows up to the Holiday party and people wonder where you left the rest of your outfit :)

Out and about:

To the office (if your sequin skirt is long enough to be appropriate):

I hope this helps some of you get more use out of your statement/party pieces!

another weekend please?

J crew silk tee, UO button down shirt (similar), AE belt (similar), watch, skinny jeans,
AE socks (similar)boots

Where did the weekend go?! There is no way I was in a turkey coma for that long that I missed the whole weekend, right? Thursday we ran from house to house to see everyone and partake in the Thanksgiving day festivities. Black Friday I was working so I definitely wasn't going shopping (in stores anyway). I made a few purchases online, though. Saturday there was more shopping. Sunday we picked out paint colors for Jake's "game room". He hates the term man cave but...if it looks like a man cave and smells like a man cave...Anyway, that's it. I was really looking forward to putting up Christmas decor! I feel like I need another weekend. I missed this one. If only I invested in that time machine when I had the chance. Bummer.

food coma

I am still ridiculously stuffed from Thanksgiving dinner last night! Ugh! But it was sooooooo worth it. What wasn't worth it though was wearing jeans. I was 2 bites away from my button popping and launching across the room like a bullet. I imagine the scenario would have played out something like this: "Oh no, what happened to your face?!" "See that girl holding up her pants? Her button almost took out my eye! Dont' worry, the doctor said the blindness is only temporary." Next year I'll be prepared and wear something like this.

acorn squash

Happy Thanksgiving!!! I wanted to get this post up before leaving the house for dinner...it didn't work out that way so I'm posting from my phone. I'm thankful for technology! I wanted to share one of my favorite Autumn side recipes. Acorn squash! Soooo yummy. I made a bunch of these (and a batch of pumpkin whoopie pies) to bring with us to Jake's family's Thanksgiving dinner :) I hope everyone enjoys their Thanksgiving, whether you're spending it with your family in a food coma or snowboarding and eating Chinese buffet.

Ingredients:
2 acorn squash
Butter
Brown sugar
Sea salt
Pepper

Optional:
2 apples (peeled, cored, cut into 1/2 inch chunks)
1 cup dried cranberries

Directions:
1) Heat oven to 350 degrees.
2) Cut squash in half (you can cut it horizontally for a flower looking shape). Scoop out the seeds.
3) Here's where I'm lazy...I put my halves in ziploc steam bags for 4 min each. Or you can heavily butter a baking dish and place them cut side down and bake for 30 minutes.
4) Turn the squash cut side up and pierce the insides all over with a fork so the flavors can absorb throughout.
5) Generously brush insides with butter and sprinkle with brown sugar (amount for personal preference). Sprinkle with salt & pepper to taste. Optional: stuff with cut apples and cranberries and brush top of stuffing with butter.
6) Bake for 20 minutes or until apples are tender.

Enjoy! Let me know if you try this! It's delicious and perfect for this chilly weather!

work it wednesday: plain white shirt

A plain white shirt is one of the most versatile pieces in your closet. It is definitely a building block to some fab outfits. To add interest to a plain piece just use texture to spice it up! Mix silk and wool, suede and sequins, fur with smooth metals, leather, or patents. Here's how I'd work a plain white shirt:
